As it relates to the current state of the labor markets, the number of Americans filing first-time claims for unemployment insurance came in at 457,000 last week, which has again brought out comments from the media like “a figure that signals the labor market will be slow to improve even as the economy grows”. Is slow employment growth a surprise to anyone? Expectations from almost all quarters call for slow improvement in the labor markets and persistently high unemployment. In fact, John C. This is a difficult pattern recognition model to follow as there can be numerous interpretations. Instead, I look for additional clues like sentiment indicators, a few traditional technical indicators, headlines in the news and covers of papers etc.

Risk assets spent the US trading day on the defensive Wednesday , despite constructive earnings releases, with US equities falling 0.6% and European indices declining up to 0.9%. The Fed’s Beige Book, which noted that “economic activity had continued to increase on balance,” but that manufacturing “slowed or levelled off,” set the tone for the afternoon session, with much of the drop in US equities and bond yields occurring around the time of its 2PM EDT release. The main US economic data release for the day, June durable goods orders, printed below expectations on the headline but with very solid readings on core capital goods orders and shipments.

The stock market indices suffered a down day today, and although they started with a brief flurry to the upside, that was about it. They sold off quickly in the morning, tested support and bounced and then consolidated, with the S&P 500 acting a bit better than the Nasdaq 100. But with Apple (AAPL) under pressure today, Nasdaq led the way down as they resumed their sell-off in the afternoon when they broke through the neckline support around the 1800 area on the NDX and 1108 on the SPX.

There's a little twist for a title. No matter what these CEO's tell you, the economy has hit the wall. The FOMC Minutes came out today, and they didn't paint a pretty picture at all. It showed how things are slowing down, and that there really isn't too much economic activity, or life, going on out there these past few months. It's scary because this earnings quarter brought about a lot of company's saying things were so good that we're raising guidance. Ouch!! Raising guidance just as things are hitting a stone wall doesn't seem like the best of timing.

Another solid session for US markets as they closed up circa 1% buoyed by June new home sales which surged 23.6% mom, more than fully offsetting downward revisions for May to hit 330k, beating the Street consensus forecast by 20k and marking one of the few constructive US releases in the last month. The housing numbers dominated the news, easily eclipsing a weak Dallas Fed manufacturing index.
